Six-Axis (Gyro + Accelerometer) MEMS MotionTracking™ Devices

Overview

The MPU-6000™ family of parts are the world’s first and only 6-axis MotionTracking devices designed for the low power, low cost, and high performance requirements of consumer electronics products.

The MPU-6000 family incorporates InvenSense’s MotionFusion™ and run-time calibration firmware that enables manufacturers to eliminate the costly and complex selection, qualification, and system level integration of discrete devices in motion-enabled products, and guarantees that sensor fusion algorithms and calibration procedures deliver optimal performance for consumers.

Motion interface is rapidly becoming a key function in many consumer electronics devices including *artphones, tablets, gaming consoles, and *art-TVs as it provides an intuitive way for consumers to interact with electronic devices by tracking motion in free space and delivering these motions as input commands.

The devices combine a 3-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis accelerometer on the same silicon die together with an onboard Di*al Motion Processor™ (DMP™) capable of processing complex 9-axis MotionFusion algorithms. The parts’ integrated 9-axis MotionFusion algorithms access external magnetometers or other sensors through an auxiliary master I²C bus, allowing the devices to gather a full set of sensor data without intervention from the system processor. The devices are offered in the same 4x4x0.9 mm QFN footprint and pinout as the current MPU-3000™ family of integrated 3-axis gyroscopes, providing a simple upgrade path and making it easy to fit on space constrained boards.

The InvenSense MotionApps™ Platform that comes with the devices abstracts motion-based complexities, offloads sensor management from the operating system and provides a structured set of APIs for application development.

For precision tracking of both fast and slow motions, the parts feature a user-programmable gyro full-scale range of ±250, ±500, ±1000, and ±2000°/sec (dps) and a user-programmable accelerometer full-scale range of ±2g, ±4g, ±8g, and ±16g.

The MPU-6000 family is comprised of four parts, with features summarized in the table below. The MPU-6000/6050 devices are targeted for *artphone, tablet, and wearable sensor applications, while the MPU-6100/6150 devices are targeted at di*al TV, set-*-box and game console remote controls.

All parts feature an industry-leading 6-axis supply current of 3.8mA. To save space, the package size of the devices has been driven down to a revolutionary footprint of 4x4x0.9mm (QFN). Additional features include an embedded temperature sensor and an on-chip oscillator with ±1% variation over the operating temperature range.
